Utility Billing

The Town of Springside utility bills are processed quarterly (March, June, September and December) and include charges for water, sewer, the OSS Waste & Recycle roll-out carts as well as a quarterly infrastructure levy of $50.00 to pay for the construction of the new sewage lift station.

Prefer to have your utility bill emailed to you? Complete this

e-notice consent form and return it to the Town Office.

Reading your water meter

Most residences in Springside have been converted to exterior water meters that our public works staff can read each quarter. However, there are some that are still located inside a residence, and therefore you must submit the meter reading yourself.

If they our unable to read your water meter, our public works staff will leave you a notice, taped to your front door, that you must submit your water meter reading. To read your water meter, please follow the examples below:

If your water meter looks like this, your water meter reading will be 6294.

Do not include the black number in the meter reading.

Help Protect our Town's Sewer System

Sewage blocks can be caused by grease and fat being put down sinks and toilets by residents.

Sewage blocks can be caused by grease and fat being put down sinks and toilets by residents.

When you flush or wash oil from your deep fryers or fat from cooking food like bacon, it forms a plaque on the inside of sewer pipes. No matter how much hot water you try to flush after the fat, eventually it cools and forms a coating in the sewer pipes which collects other debris and will eventually cause a block in sewer pipes. This could result in the town’s sewer lines backing up into your house and your neighbours’ houses.

We recommend you wait for the grease or fat to cool and put it in your garbage. Another option is to pour it into an old can or glass jar when it is hot and let it cool and then place the container in the garbage. Taking the extra care will save a lot of cost and frustration down the road.

Did you know it is also harmful to flush the following items down the toilet?

  • Personal care wipes/baby wipes
  • Diapers
  • Cotton swabs
  • Hair
  • Dental floss
  • Tampons
  • Sanitary products
  • Condoms
  • Old medicines

While products may be advertised as "flushable," in reality items such as baby wipes, makeup remover cloths, tampons and disinfectant wipes do not decompose in the sanitary sewer system. Flushing this material causes damage to the sewer system and may cause sewer backups in your home. Flushables should be disposed of in the garbage.

Old medication can be taken to any local pharmacy. Keeping medication out of the lagoon means that it will not be released back into the environment during spring and fall release.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a utility bill?

The total cost of your utility bill depends on water consumption. In addition to the consumption charges there are also fixed charges.

  • Water fixed charge: $102.00 (0 to 30 cubic meters) per quarter;
  • Consumption rate: $3.40 per cubic meter for usage above the initial 30 cubic meters (per quarter);
  • Sewer fixed charge: $51.00 per quarter for 30 cubic meters or less and $1.70/cubic meter over 30 cubic meters. (based on your water usage)
  • Garbage & Recycling: $37.50 for each service-this is not an increase, just an adjustment to balance the costs of each rather than $50.00 for garbage and $25.00 for recycling as was previously charged.
  • Additional Garbage or Recycling Cart: If you require a second garbage or recycling cart this can be arranged through the Town Office. You will be billed at a rate of $37.50/quarter for each extra cart.
  • Infrastructure Levy of $50.00.

How is your water bill calculated?

Your water meter measures the water consumed in cubic meters. The amount of water your residence or business consumes is multiplied by the current water and sewer rates.

Am I still charged if I don’t use any water?

There is a minimum cost charged to be able to supply water services to your property even if no water is actually used. This is the fixed charge for the water and sewer system.

If you are going to be absent from your residence for an extended period of time, the service can be disconnected at the curbstop and then reconnected upon your return. There is an associated cost with the disconnect and reconnect. Once the curbstop is shut off, you will not receive a bill for the fixed charges. Contact the Town Office for further information.

Why did my water get disconnected?

If you have a utility billing in arrears, the Town of Springside may disconnect water at any time, without notice. If your water is disconnected for non-payment, the utility billing must be paid to current plus an additional $50 before it will be reconnected ($100 if the reconnection is required outside of regular business hours).

We strongly encourage residents to keep in contact with the Town Office if they are having financial complications that do not allow them to pay their utilities in full. The Town Office is amenable to payment arrangements, and encourages residents to make monthly payments to keep accounts current to avoid any water service disruptions.
